VAASTU GROUNDRULES FOR FLATS AND APARTMENTS-II

As far as possible, �L� shaped and �C� shaped constructions should be avoided. If �L� shaped construction cannot be avoided, such construction should be to the South and to the West of the entire plot, leaving the North and East side open. It is more advantageous to construct �C� shaped building if maximum open space is left towards the North and the East. And in �C� shaped building, open space should not be left towards the South.

Main entrance door of every flat should be located properly in an exalted position only in one of the following four exalted locations namely Northern Northeast, Eastern Northeast, Southern Southeast and Western Northwest. The hinges of the main entrance door should be only on the Southern or Western side of the door frame in any of the above locations.

Higher and heavier compound wall should be constructed in the place where inauspicious street focus or �veedhishula� meets the apartment building.

The Southern and Western compound walls should be heavier and thicker and the Northern and Eastern compound walls should be lower and thinner.

Proper cross-ventillation can be provided by having a door or a window in front of the main door on the other side of the flat. While providing such doors, it should be ensured that the West and South side door is smaller than the North and East side door.

Drawing room must have larger windows in the North and East. It is important to have a window in the East of the study room. Similarly, the kitchen should also have a large window in the East. The exhaust fan in the kitchen can be in the East or South of Southeast corner.

All bedrooms should have necessarily a window in the West of Northwest. It should be noted that as far as possible, windows or openings should not be in the South and if they are unavoidable, they should be smaller in size and fewer in number.

A perfect cent percent beneficial location for a kitchen in the flat is Southeast corner. The oven should be placed in the East of Southeast enabling East facing while cooking. Alternatively, kitchen can be located in the West of Northwest (75% good effect), or in the West (65% good effect), and to certain extent (50%) it is okay to have the kitchen in the South. In all cases, cooking platform should be in the Southeast corner of the kitchen, enabling the cook to face East only. The sink in the kitchen should be in the Northeast corner of the kitchen. A kitchen in the Northeast or Southwest is undesirable as it would bring economic losses and bankruptcy.

Mezzanine floors should be only in the West, South or Southwest of the flats, and it should be totally avoided in the North, East and Northeast directions.

A common toilet in the living room should be towards the Northwest of the living room or alternatively to the Southeast. And in case of bedrooms toilets are preferred in the Northwest corner. Toilets can also be located in the West or South sectors. If a toilet is unavoidable in the Southwest corner, it should be constructed at a higher level and only Western closets should be used. The taps in the toilet should be either in the East, North or Northeast. The slope of the flooring of the toilet should facilitate flowing of water in the East, North or Northeast directions. The geyser in the toilet should be located in the Southeast corner or alternatively in the Northwest corner along the South or West walls respectively.

The flooring of the flats should be in even level. Southwest corner room alone can have slightly higher level flooring. Circular or triangular designs in the flooring to be avoided. Marble can be used for drawing room, dining room, pooja room and the study room and can be avoided for the flooring of bedroom and toilets. There should not be any room having lower level of flooring in the Southwest, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. It is safer to have all the rooms in the even level.

The pooja room in a flat can be located preferably in the Northeast zone. Alternatively, pooja room can be in the West or East of the study room, kitchen or dining room.

Living room in the flat is preferred in the Northeast, Northwest, East or Northern directions. All heavy furniture such as sofa, cots, diwan, tables should be arranged along the Southern or Western walls. Light furniture such as folding or fibre chairs or modas can be arranged along the Northern or Eastern directions. The Northeast corner of the living room should be kept vacant. It is advised to keep the money-plant in the flower pots of the living room in the North or East zones.

The master bedroom in the flat should be in the Southwest corner. The owners of the flat while sleeping should stretch their legs towards the North. In the master bedroom, the man should sleep in the Southwest side of the bed and the woman in the Southeast side.

Children�s bedroom should not be in the Southwest corner because children staying in Southwest room will disobey and trouble the parents and they try to act independently. For male children, a room in the Northeast or in the West can be allotted; and for female children, a Northwest room is recommended.
