Rudraksha, The Eye of Lord Shiva!

Symbolism

Rudraksha – The Eye of Shiva

The word Rudraksha has originated from the two Sanskrit words: Rudra, and aksha which means “the eye of Shiva”.

The name Rudra is from the Sanskrit root rud, which means ‘to weep’. According to Shiva Purana, Lord Siva had been meditating for many, many years for the wellfare of all creatures. When he came out of his samadhi, his tears rolled down from Kailash to the earthly plane and and mother earth gave birth to Rudraksha trees.

There is no ornament worn on a humanbody which is as auspicious and powerful as these beads.

Rudraksha is said to be Rudra’s (Lord Shiva) gift to the mankind. Anyone who wears Rudraksha with devotion is like Rudra himself.

Sastras speak of 1 to 38 mukhis in Rudraksha but normally 1 to 14 mukhis are used for general purposes and the rest are rare and special beads.

The common mantras for all beads is “Om Namah Sivaya” and “Mahamrityunjaya Mantra”.

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:
ॐ त्र्य॑म्बकं यजामहे सु॒गन्धिं॑ पुष्टि॒वर्ध॑नम् ।

According to Shiva Puran, Rudraksha trees, the favourites of Lord Shiva, grow in Gouda Land. In the present era, it is the area of the gangetic plain on the southern border of Asia to the foothills of the great Himalayas and middle area of Nepal.

The Legend

According to the ancient text Devi Bhagwat Puran, there was a demon known as Tripurasur who was very strong and had tremendous energy and power.

Due to the power and energy he became proud and started to trouble deities and sages. No one was able to defeat this strong demon in war.

On seeing his immoral actions, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and other deities prayed to the Lord of Lords Mahadev Shiva to destroy the evil Tripurasur.

Lord Shiva closed his eyes and meditated for some time. When he opened his lotus-shaped eyes, tears fell from them onto the earth.

Wherever his tears fell, a Rudraksha tree grew. The fruits that grow on this tree are known as Rudraksha beads. Lord Shiva then used his lethal, divine weapon known as Aghor and destroyed Tripurasur.

In the Mahabharata it is written, “The Lord of the universe (Shiva) drew his bow and unleashed his arrows at the Triple City (Tripura), burning its demons, and hurling them into the western ocean, for the welfare of creation.

Then the ‘three-eyed’ God restrained the fire born of his own anger, saying to it, “Enough! Do not reduce the world to ashes.”

According to another ancient text Shiva Mahapuran, Matha Parvati asked Lord Shiva about the origin of the Rudraksha.

Lord Shiva answered that he had done penance for thousand years and when he opened his eyes his tears fell down; from these tears the rudraksha tree was born.

Shiva Purana describe Rudraksha’s origin as the tears of Lord Shiva. After meditating for many years for the welfare of all creatures when Lord Shiva opened his eyes, hot drops of tears rolled down and the mother earth gave birth to Rudraksha trees.

The science behind Rudraksha beads was well understood and respected by the Vedic Rishis and the beads have been worn and worshipped by sadhaks for their spiritual and bio-medical properties.

Botanical Background

The botanical name for rudraksha is Elaeocarpus ganitrus and it is from the Elaeocarpaceae family.

Rudraksha is a fruit of the plant Elaeocarpus angustifolius. 360 species are known worldwide under the genus Elaeocarpus including Rudraksha.

Elaeocarpus species are found in Nepal, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tibet, China, Australia, South America and South Africa.

In Sanskrit, Rudraksham means Rudraksha fruit as well as Rudraksha tree.

Rudraksha tree grows on mountains and hilly region of Nepal, Indonesia, Java, Sumatra, and Burma.

Its leaves are green in colour and the fruits are brown in colour, sour in taste.

Rudraksha is a large tree, about the same size as the banyan tree, with a smallish spear-shaped leaf. It grows in mountainous regions like Nepal, where the best Rudrakshas are to be found, and takes fifteen to eighteen years to take full shape.

In English this tree is called the ustram after its fruit, which has a hard kernel, the formation of which very much resembles the human brain.

These seeds are dried and worn as malas, especially by the followers of Lord Shiva, who are known as Shaivites.

Rudraksha is not a seed, but a fruit. The fresh fruits of rudraksha are deep blue in colour and look magnificent. Therefore the rudraksha plant is also popularly known as the blue marble fruit plant.

Its beautiful colour is not caused by any plant pigment, but is due to the microstructural character of the cuticle and light interference.

The blue colour is because of the reflection of light from the cuticle. This phenomenon is very rare in the plant kingdom.

As the fruits mature, this blue colour slowly changes to deep grey to black. The dark coloured fruits are soaked in water for a few days to soften the fibrous fruit skin.

After removing this dark cover, we get the hard, stony endocarp of the fruit that we know as the Rudraksha bead.

Today there are three types of rudraksha available- Nepalese type (the most popular), Indonesian and the Indian.

In the world market of rudraksha, 75 percent are from Indonesia, 20 per cent from India and other countries, and barely 5 per cent from Nepal.

The Himalayan beads simply seem to be larger, heavier and more powerful due to the environment they grow in.

The Rudraksha mala

When making a rudraksha mala, silk thread should be used to string the beads together, and their faces should be aligned.

Gold and silver can also be used to make the mala. The smaller beads are commonly used for japa.

According to the tantra Sastras, the specified number of beads to be worn is as follows: around the neck – 26+1 or 32+1 or 54+1; around the forehead – forty; around the ears – six; around the wrists – twelve; and on the upper arms – sixteen.

Rudraksha is hot in nature, and has magnetic and electric power. Wearing the mala helps to regulate the blood pressure. The five-faced rudraksha mala monitors blood pressure and cardiac ailments. It must be worn next to the skin to have the required effect. Also, to control blood pressure, put two five-faced rudraksha beads in a glass of water, just after sunset. Drink the water first thing in the morning before any other intake. (Do not use copper glasses, and do not swallow the beads.)

The rudraksha mala is also excellent for tranquillizing the mind against nervous disorders, as it is said to destroy worries and induce positive thoughts and a peaceful mind. For nervousness and coldness due to shock, hold a big five-faced rudraksha tightly in your right palm for ten minutes. You will regain your confidence, and the body will start warming up.

In addition, rudraksha are said to be good for those who suffer from diabetes. The therapeutic and spiritual effect of the rudraksha is due to the fact that, whenever the bead touches the skin, human magnetism and electricity is produced.

Rudraksha and the chakras

Rudraksha And Chakras
Rudraksha beads work in synchronization with chakras, the ‘vortices of energy’ within our body. Life is Energy. We are not just physical bodies. There is a pulsating electromagnetic energy field, almost a rainbow-like aura, a luminous, universal, ‘subtle-energy’ life force that surrounds us and circulates through us. This brings us the experience of Life.

The chakras within us are the concentrated spirals of energy through which this universal energy flows. There are seven main (and a number of smaller) chakras located along our spine, from the base to    the    crown, that    represent distinct frequencies within the universe.

These chakras interact with the auric electromagnetic energy and transform it into energy that interacts with our body’s glands and lymphatic system.

Chakras feed us good energy and dispose-off unwanted energy. It is believed that Rudraksha beads nourish our chakras in the ‘correct way’ and enhance our general health to help create an ‘illness free and disease free’ life.

Rudraksha beads when in contact with the body, have a harmonizing effect as they begin to energize the chakras and bring them to their perfectly balanced state by the Law Of Resonance.

Each chakra has a seed (bija) frequency associated with it. Often times, this correlation is visually represented by the Sanskrit letters that are shown imprinted upon the chakras in Yogic and tantric literature.

The frequencies emitted by carefully selected Rudraksha beads resonate with the seed frequencies of the chakras of the wearer.

This opens up any blockage in chakras, allowing the energy to flow back and forth between the wearer and the universe which has a direct correlation to the total health and wellbeing that the wearer experiences.

Wearers of Rudraksha beads attest that the beads create a positive outlook in life resulting in tangible benefits.

The beads enhance energies that deal with major aspects of life such as: health and wellbeing, satisfaction, courage, affluence, creativity, intuitive ability, abundance, harmony in relationships, attraction, self- empowerment, and nirvana.

Those who face obstacles, failures and suffer from emotional setbacks or those who are seeking self-empowerment, healing, and success can directly and effectively benefit by wearing a Rudraksha.

Rudraksha is the lovable bead of Lord Shiva. Rudraksha and Chakras carry immense importance in balancing the negative vibes of the body.

Chakras are present in our body in the form of Crown chakra, Brow chakra, Throat Chakra, Heart Chakra, Navel chakra, sacral chakra and the Root chakra.

Rudraksha balances the chakras of the body by removing the negative vibes of the body. Rudraksha controls all the seven major chakras and each chakra control several organs of the body. It is governed by expression, feelings, senses and including the sixth sense.

The person goes through different life experiences in the body. Negative feelings and emotions can play havoc in our life. Rudraksha heals the blocked chakras of the body, as blocked chakra inhibit the free flow of energy and also creates emotional disorders.

Each and every major chakra has linked to the endocrine gland of our body. Endocrine glands are the glands that secrets hormone directly into our blood.

Wearing Rudraksha according to their faces can cure several chakra problems.

• 1 Mukhi half Moon shaped affects Sahasrara Chakra.
• 9 Mukhi Rudraksha bead affects and cures the Ajna chakra.
• 3 Mukhi, 4 Mukhi, and 6 Mukhi Rudraksha heal Visuddhi Chakra.
• 12 Mukhi Rudraksha heals Anahata Chakra.
• 3, 6, 7, 12, Rudraksha Mala combination heals Swadhisthana chakra.

Chakra associated with Endocrine Gland
Muladhara Chakra (Root) – The Adrenal Medulla.
Swasthisthana (Sacral) – Sexual Organ.
Manipura (Solar) – Pancreas
Anahata (Heart) – The Thymus
Vishuddha (Throat) – Thyroid Gland
Ajna (Third eye) – Hypothalamus
Sahasrara (Crown) – Pituitary gland

The rudraksha bead is also related to the chakras or energy vortexes in the human spine. The ek-mukhi or one-faced rudraksha is related to vishuddhi and Lord Shiva. Another name for Shiva is Akasha-adi-pati, the lord of space. The tattwa or element ruling vishuddhi chakra is space. The two-faced rudraksha is related to anahata chakra, the air element, vayu, and Ardhanareshwara, the half-male, half-female form of Shiva. The three-faced rudraksha is associated with the God Agni, the three shaktis or powers – ichchha (desire), kriya (action) and jnana (wisdom), and also with the three gunas. The chakra concerned here is manipura, whose element is fire, agni. This bead is ideal for those who suffer from inferiority complexes, subjective fear, gilt and depression. Its mantra is ‘Om Kleem Namaha’.

Swadhisthana is represented by the four-faced rudraksha, which is the symbol of Brahma and also of creation. It increases memory power, and the wearer gains the power of creativity when blessed. The mantra is ‘Om Hreem Namaha’. The element of this chakra is water, apas.

The five-faced rudraksha bead is related to the five-faced form of Rudra, and is connected with mooladhara, which is governed by the element earth or prithvi. This bead is good for everyone and anyone can wear it. The wearer of the five-faced mala gains health and peace.

Biomedical properties

Though the powerful effect of the Rudraksha beads has been a known phenomenon in Vedic knowledge, it is only since the late eighties that their effect has been more widely acknowledged, after the research done by a group of scientists led by Dr Subas Rai, of the Institute of Technology, University of Benaras, India.

Scientifically, the rudrakasha beads are dielectric as they store electrical energy and also possess permanent magnetic properties.

The dielectric and magnetic properties of the rudraksha seeds impart positive charges in the bioelectrical system of the human body in a life-supporting manner.

These beads also have the property of diamagnetism. Diamagnetism is the phenomenon wherein a material acquires temporary magnetic property in the presence of an external magnetic field.

Therefore, the rudraksha beads can induce holistic healing.

Rules and Restrictions

Wearing a Rudraksha, it is extremely important to take certain precaution and care in order to get maximum benefits from it and to maintain its sanctity.

Tulsi mala is very sensitive and it requires the practitioner to have a strict sattwic diet and lifestyle.

There is no ‘incorrect’ way to use Rudraksha. There are no ill-effects of wearing any type of Rudraksha.

Nowhere in the Upanishad does Lord Kalagni Rudra mention any negative consequences of wearing Rudraksha.
Rather, the Upanishad focuses on the various types of positive effects exuded by the beads; it provides enough information for one to personally decide on the type he or she needs most.

Bramacharis, Grahasthas, Vanaprasthas, Sanyasis, Child, Boy, Girl, Women and all beings can wear Rudraksha. Even animals can wear.
Non – Hindus can also wear. The divinity of it should be adorned and the wearer should have a conviction that it is not an ordinary ornament or a mere decorative.

Rudrakshas should not be shared / exchanged / transferred /from one person to another person after it has been worn .

Always wear Rudraksha around the neck so that the beads touches the Heart area.

Rudraksha is best if worn in the black, yellow or white colored thread or it can be worn in silver, gold, copper and mixed metal .

Rudraksha’s effect can been seen generally between 15 to 60 days but sometime due to lot of past bad karma and problems some people cannot see the major changes in life before a year.

Once rudraksha removes past bad karmic sin and problems then they can see the tremendous changes. So don’t get frustrated about not seeing the effect faster.

However Scriptures do not mention such a restriction. Hence the wearer can decide accordingly.

There is no mention of any ill-effects of wearing Rudraksha as a non-vegetarian. However, bearing in mind the cyclical flow of Rudraksha’s energy in the form of a mala (rosary), it is best to refrain from non-vegetarian food as much as possible.

Rudraksha amplifies one’s own bodily energy and vibrations, and as the consumption of meat is highly tamasic, it would be wise not to eat bull, cow or boar flesh and to reduce the consumption of other non-vegetarian food or eventually cease it altogether.

Though it is not specifically provided in the scriptures, it is advisable not to wear Rudraksha while attending a death ceremony. If at all it is unavoidable, you may take a bath and do jala abhishek to the Rudraksha and wear it again chanting Shiv Mantras.

In a sawar Rudraksha one of the beads will always be a one mukhi and it is considered to be next only to the original and rare one mukhi round Rudraksha in virtues. Natural holes exist in both the beads.

Trijuti:

Trijuti is a wonder of nature. Three Rudraksha beads get joined on the tree itself. A trijuti is also known as Tribhagi, Gauri Path or Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh and represents trinity.

It is symbol of all the basic characteristics of the universe. It represents the complete personality and gives the wearer total control over difficult situations.

It can be a very useful tool in leadership and in achieving total success.

Thiruchitrambalam!
