Kirupanandha Variyar was a Shaivite spiritual teacher from India. He was an ardent Murugan devotee who helped rebuild and complete the works on many of the temples across the state. He is well renowned for his discourses on various shaivite legends.

Early life

Kirupanandha Variyar Swamy, popularly known as Variyar Swamigal, was born in Kangeyanallur, a small village on the bank of Palar river. This province is referred to as Thondai Nadu in Sangam literature.[citation needed]

Isai Perarignar

Variyar Swamigal received the award Isai Perarignar in 1967,[7] given to Tamil musicians every year by the Tamil Isai Sangam of Tamil Nadu in Southern India.

His father taught him music along with spirituality and hence, his discourses were always accompanied by musicians who were legends by their own right.

Swamigal established Thiruvarul Dhavaneri Manram’ and appointed Preachers for propagating the religious and devotional rites and ideals.

Life of Swamigal spread over the devotional activities, Religious rites, particularly Swamigal made Saint Arunagirinathar’s ‘Thiruppugazh’ known to the entire world.

Swamigal set himself as a legend for self discipline; above all his life made men to live as men.

Variyar Swamigal had enormous, deep knowledge and practice of literature and music.

He conquered, discipline, extraordinary memory power, kindness and vast knowledge of texts.

Known as: Deiva Thiru Muruga Kirupanantha Variyar Swamigal ,Palani Easana Sivachariya Swamigal graced Variyar Swamigal ‘Nirvana Dhiksha’ and named him as ‘Vama Deva Sivam’ (Dhikshanamam).

He did great service to sustain and re-establish hinduism and theism in the state. He has also scripted a movie, Siva Kavi. He used all possible mediums to spread the Hinduism not restricting himself considering one as inferior and another as superior.

In his famous Detroit discourse on Muruga’s kindness, he proposed that women’s name should also be added as an initial to the child’s name. He is considered the bullwark of Kaumara and synonymous with the worship of Lord Murugan.

He always insisted on discipline being as important to devotion saying one without the other would be fruitless. He is considered to be 64th nayanmar by the people of the state.

Quote: Forehead is like a wall and I have white washed it. Only when the house is cleaned up, finally one will take up whitewashing of the walls. My house [body and mind] are clean. So I am telling people that I have whitewashed my wall since the house is already pure and clean. I think your house [body and mind] are not yet clean. So you are yet to whitewash your walls.
